Board approves course sequence for Rising Scholars Academy for 2016-17 school year and announcement of new professional vacancies

The 2016-17 course sequence for Rising Scholars Academy of South Texas (Rising Scholars) was approved during the Dec. 1 board meeting.

Course sequences are usually brought to the board for approval each spring; however, as Rising Scholars is currently in its inaugural year and will be phasing in its second grade level next year, the campus course sequence needed to be approved early to allow for its use with incoming students and parents and also to determine the certifications needed for new faculty members to be hired leading up to next school year.

Like STPA, Rising Scholars offers its students the opportunity to take above-grade-level coursework (i.e. Math 8 in the 7th-grade and Algebra 1 in the 8th-grade, and English 1 and Biology in the 8th-grade).

Also, with a complete 8th-grade class to be in place next year, Rising Scholars will be offering its students a Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Gateway to Technology course, eligible for high school credit at the Science Academy, and a Principles of Health Science/Medical Terminology course for those students interested in pursuing their high school education at one of STISD’s two medically-themed campuses.

“We believe that all students, teachers and administrators will together learn rigorous content in a student-centered instructional setting,” said Jeff Hembree.

“The course sequence provides the structure within which to accomplish high- quality results for all students.”

The course sequence may be accessed through the Rising Scholars website at risingscholars.stisd.net or at the following link.

An announcement of 22 vacancies for new professional positions at Rising Scholars Academy for the 2016-17 school year was also approved during the board meeting.

Twenty teacher positions will be available: English: 4; math: 4; science: 4; social studies: 2; physical education: 2; health science technology: 1; Gateway to Technology: 1; fine arts: 1; Spanish:1.

A position for counselor and an instructional technology specialist will also be available.

The announcement of vacancies is planned to be published this month before the holiday break to allow for ample time for people to see the announcement and apply.
