Region One ESC Selects Marla M. Guerra, Ed.D., as Regional Superintendent of the Year
Special to STISD (from Region One ESC):
Region One ESC Selects Regional Superintendent of the Year
South Texas ISD Superintendent Receives Top Honor
Could it be Marla M. Guerra, Ed.D.’s collaborative approach to district decision-making, the district’s community inclusive Strategic Planning process she introduced in 2006, or is it her empowerment of campus employees - “allowing them to lead their schools with autonomy, and respecting their professionalism and expertise”- that makes her stand out as an excellent educational leader? It is because of these, and many more outstanding leadership qualities, that Dr. Marla M. Guerra has been selected as the Region One ESC Regional Superintendent of the Year.
Under the direction of the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), the Superintendent of the Year Program recognizes exemplary superintendents for excellence and achievement in educational leadership. The selection of the Superintendent of the Year honor is based on a superintendent’s dedication to improving educational quality, ability to build effective employee relations, and commitment to public involvement in education. Nominations for the regional award were submitted to Region One Education Service Center and reviewed by a select committee consisting of Region One School Board members who completed Leadership TASB training.
Dr. Marla M. Guerra has led South Texas ISD, a district of 4 magnet high schools and 2 junior high/middle schools, for the past 15 years. Utilizing collaboration and innovation to drive the district toward success, South Texas ISD has met and exceeded state accountability standards consistently over the years and oftentimes finds itself on many national “best of” lists. Contributing to this success is that through the district’s Strategic Planning process, student achievement goals are established and innovative strategies for reaching those goals are developed and shared with everyone within the district. Wanting success for all, Dr. Guerra has taken steps to assist the struggling learner. Through the implementation of before and after school tutorial programs, the availability of computer labs to students for additional learning opportunities and Wi-Fi connections in all facilities and on buses for students who commute from neighboring communities, Dr. Guerra has ensured that every student has the opportunity for success. To further demonstrate support for student success, Dr. Guerra established a “contract” system by which struggling students contract with their teachers to complete their work and avoid failing.
“The South Texas ISD community should be extremely proud of Dr. Guerra for receiving this honor; it is recognition not only for Dr. Guerra as the district’s educational leader, but for the entirety of the South Texas ISD community,” says Region One ESC Executive Director, Dr. Cornelio Gonzalez. “Dr. Guerra is a model educational leader who is worthy of this recognition and will represent our region well.”
Superintendents from Region One school districts are eligible for nomination by their school board. The state committee will select five state finalists and the Superintendent of the Year will be announced on September 23, 2016 at the annual joint convention of the Texas Association of School Boards and Texas Association of School Administrators.
