Twenty students competed at UIL State Solo & Ensemble Contest in Austin

During the June 21 board meeting, the STISD Board of Directors recognized 20 STISD students for their achievements at the UIL State Solo & Ensemble Competition at the University of Texas at Austin on May 28.   

Two students earned a Division I rating with a gold medal and were named Outstanding Soloists. Catalina Miranda, a BETA student, received those honors with her acoustic guitar performance, and Mahmood Alfayoumi, a Science Academy student, received those honors for his piano performance. 

In total, five students received Division I ratings, 13 students received Division II ratings, three students received Division III ratings and one student received a Division IV rating.  Students competed in their respective categories: violin, piano, flute, treble voice, acoustic guitar and b-flat clarinet.  

BETA students are Josias L. Bahena, a rising senior from McAllen; Fanzhen Ding, a Class of 2016 graduate from Edinburg; Diana Huerta, a rising junior from Mission; Seung Min Kim, a Class of 2016 gradute from Edinburg; and Catarina Miranda, a rising junior from Edinburg.  

Medical Academy student is Jacqueline Mejia, a rising sophomore from Brownsville.  

Med High students are Margaret Cua, a rising junior from Rancho Viejo; Fiona Okada, a Class of 2016 graduate from Mission; and Xin Yee Ooi, a rising senior from Mission. 

Science Academy students are Mahmood Alfayoumi, a rising junior from Rancho Viejo; Eugene Choi, a rising senior from Mission; Melissa Haefeli, a rising senior from Mission; Swathi Holla, a rising senior from Mission; Michelle Kim, a rising senior from McAllen; Niharika Kunta, a rising sophomore from Edinburg; Maisie Nievara, a rising sophomore from Brownsville; Xin Hui Ooi, a rising sophomore from Mission; Guillermo Perez, a rising junior from McAllen, Sean Wang, a rising senior from Rio Hondo; and Kevin Wei, a rising senior from McAllen.
