This is the image for the news article titled STISD names Dr. Lara as Lone Finalist for Superintendent PositionOn Wednesday night, Sept. 26, South Texas Independent School District (STISD) named Dr. Marco Antonio Lara, Jr., as the lone finalist for the superintendent position being vacated by the retirement of long time superintendent Dr. Marla Guerra.

Dr. Lara is currently serving as the deputy director of Region One Education Service Center, and has been in that position for the past 12 years. Prior to that, Lara served the San Perlita school district as teacher, chief financial officer and the final six years as superintendent of schools. During his tenure in San Perlita, the district received many academic honors, including becoming an “Exemplary” district.

Dr. Lara received his bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University-Kingsville and his Doctorate degree from The University of Texas- Pan American.

Dr. Lara will join STISD after a state mandated 21-day waiting period. Following the 21-day waiting period, the STISD board of directors and Dr. Lara will execute the superintendent’s contract.

Board president Joe Lopez stated, “We appreciate the outstanding leadership that Dr. Guerra provided, and we will miss her. At the same time, we are thrilled and very excited about the opportunity to hire someone with the experience, leadership and personality that Dr. Lara brings to our district. We look very much forward to a bright future and to Dr. Lara’s transition to our team.”

Dr. Lara states, “I am honored and humbled for this tremendous opportunity that the board has given me. My family and I are very anxious to become part of this outstanding district and look forward to transitioning into the district as soon as possible. My hope is to contribute every way possible to continue the great work that Dr. Guerra and the board have done for many years.”
