This is the image for the news article titled Med High & Medical Academy teams to compete in UTRGV School of Medicine competitionStudents from South Texas Independent School District’s (STISD) South Texas High School for Health Professions (Med High) in Mercedes and South Texas Academy for Medical Professions (Medical Academy) in Olmito will participate in The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s (UTRGV) first Education Collaboration for Aspiring Health Professionals (ECAHP) competition, Saturday, Feb. 9, at UTRGV’s Medical Education Building Auditorium on the Edinburg Campus.

 

Organized by UTRGV School of Medicine students and its Area Health Education Center Program, the daylong competition, from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., will feature eight teams of high school students developing creative solutions to meeting the healthcare challenges of people living in rural South Texas.

 

Participating teams, of five students each, will present their cases to be judged by a panel of faculty members from the School of Medicine. The Med High team includes Mir Ali, a sophomore from Brownsville; Mia Almaguer, a junior from Mission; Aaron Chen, a senior from Mission; Gabino Escalada, a senior from Edinburg; and Alexandra Piccio, a junior from Brownsville. The Medical Academy team includes junior Keila Cervantes, from Brownsville; and seniors Azucena Cruz from Brownsville; Angelica Montes from San Benito; and Briana Boughter and Kush Patel, from South Padre Island.

 

The teams will vie for prizes to be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place winners. Winning teams will also be invited to have their posters displayed at the School of Medicine’s annual SOM Research Symposium.
