The fifth annual STISD Battle of the Books competition kicked off with a competition amongst our two middle school campuses on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Biblioteca Las Americas (BLA) in Mercedes, and the high school competition followed on Thursday, Jan. 24.

All six campuses had teams compete for the coveted “traveling trophies” and a chance to advance to the Region One competition on behalf of the district.

The winning middle school team, made up ofSTPA students Leonardo Moro-Ochoa, a 7th-grader from McAllen; Rogelio Alex Arreola, an 8th-grader from Edinburg; Sebastian Salinas, a 7th-grader from Edinburg; and Robert Schmidt, a 7th-grader from Edinburg – will compete at the regional meet on Feb. 20. The team was co-sponsored by Mrs. Patricia Power and Mr. Robert Schmidt, who both teach English Language Arts (ELA) at STPA.

For the first-time ever, at the end of the regular competition, the high school teams had a three-way tie. The teams involved were Team Human from Medical Academy, Team Hudler from Med High and Team Wiley from Science Academy. After the sudden death and ultimate sudden death rounds, Team Wiley took the win and will advance to the regional meet on Feb. 18. Team Wiley, which was coached by Science Academy English teacher Mrs. Lucinda Wiley, includes Science Academy juniors Tamara Rodriguez from Brownsville, Carmine Villarreal from McAllen, and Marina Ramos from Harlingen.
