STISD teams compete at UTRGV School of Medicine’s Education Collaboration for Aspiring Health Professionals (ECAHP) 2020

STISD Health Professions students and assistant principal smile after receiving second place at UTRGV School of Medicine competitionTeams from South Texas ISD Health Professions in Mercedes and South Texas ISD Medical Professions in Olmito competed in The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine’s Education Collaboration for Aspiring Health Professionals (ECAHP) 2020 on Saturday, Feb. 8.

The students were asked to read and review several articles leading up to the competition to prepare them for tackling their assigned challenge. That day, they were given a case study on a fictional patient, which required taking into account background information and developing innovative interventions to help him. The students presented on health disparities, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and atherosclerosis.

In the second year of the competition, the Health Professions team placed second out of eight teams participating. This team, coached by Health Science Technology (HST) instructor Almira Villarreal, includes students Mir Ali, a senior from Brownsville; Mia Almaguer, a senior from Mission; Alexandra Piccio, a senior from Brownsville; Jeff Ooi, a junior from Mission; and Andrew Sun, a junior from Edinburg. Medical Professions’ Team Angels, coached by HST instructor Hanani Vasquez, competed as well. The team made up of Keila Cervantes, a senior from Brownsville; Beyonce Lopez, a senior from Brownsville; Samuel Graybill, a junior from Brownsville; Gabriella Garza, a senior from Hidalgo; and Hannah Escobar, a senior from Harlingen; did not place within the top three in this year’s competition.
